Together with a group of 5 individuals having visual disabilities, we brainstormed about the activities that we can do. Often the discussion would go back to SUPW – Socially Useful and Productive Work. The social usefulness of the aim of the project was clearly visible, if we could gainfully employ people with disabilities in a manufacturing project. However, the “productive” nature of what we are to manufacture was not yet ascertained.
The idea was to work with the hands. So the sense of touch could be best used for productivity. Manoj stepped up to say, “Let’s spread light. Even though we can’t see the outside world, our inner vision tells us, we can enlighten the world with our work.”
That was it. The first step towards productivity. We have decided to make candles.
